Magomayev never set himself apart from his native land. He sang in Azerbaijani, took pride in his grandfather's heritage, and returned to Baku all his life — the city that still calls him its own.

Muslim Magomayev's name is the name of his grandfather, a classic of Azerbaijani music. Throughout his life the singer carried this bond with the national culture, feeling himself its direct heir.
His mother tongue, the Baku courtyard, the melodies of mugham and of the sea — all of it entered his art and made his voice recognisably Azerbaijani even in a Russian song.
